References allow employers an opportunity to evaluate the information
you provided them and what you did not tell them. Except in a few
states where laws provide incentives and protections to employers to
provide information, employers limit the information they provide
inquirers concerning former employees. They do this to limit their
exposure from potential legal actions. This limitation makes finding
accurate information regarding past employment difficult for
researchers, therefore, they may go to extreme means to uncover who
you really are.

Tips: Find out from your past employers what information they provide
regarding your employment. Know your company's policy regarding post
employment information. You can receive this information from your
Human Resources or Payroll department upon request.
